Quick Guide to Wales: |
||||
Wales is a land of pleasurable coast and countryside, with dramatic contrasts and intense natural beauty. It has wide variety of scenery with each season bringing its own disposition. Some of the countries beauty is unsurpassed with over half of the Snowdonia National Park set in Mid Wales. High mountains and breathtaking views along with sprawling green hills and attractive lakes make Wales the ideal natural retreat. An unusual means of seeing the Welsh countryside is by riding on one of the Great Little Trains. Developing industries in Mid Wales found a need for transport and so a network of small railways was born. Five such narrow gauge railways operate in the region dating back to the previous century. Wales is also an ideal retreat for Horse riders providing terrain and countryside superb for pony trekking. While the coastline is interspersed by popular seaside resorts and small fishing villages, life inland revolves around historic market towns and villages. Over a hundred miles of coastline on the west of the region gives sandy beaches and rugged cliffs leading down to secluded coves. With traditional half-timbered black and white buildings, the Welsh Marches maintain much of their Welsh character and tradition and was by the Marcher Lords many centuries ago. A continuous theme throughout history has been the struggle to keep Wales independent from the influence of frequent foreign invaders, evident with ruined castles and fortifications. An assortment of museums and regional centres are available for those wishing to learn more of Welsh history. |
