Quick Guide to Edinburgh: |
||||
Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, has been described as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The City is built upon hills and valleys that give it picturesque distinction from 12th century buildings steeped in history to the best in contemporary arts and entertainment. If you're looking for an energetic holiday or relaxing city break amid remarkable scenery, you'll find it in Edinburgh. Edinburgh has been recognised as the capital of Scotland since the fifteenth century. Edinburgh is easily accessible by road, rail, air or sea and is the most popular tourist destination in Britain after London. Just outside the city are the Lothians where breathtaking scenery can be discovered, miles of unspoilt beaches, peaceful countryside, fascinating attractions and exceptional golf courses are waiting to be enjoyed. A succession of distinguished Georgian and Victorian architects during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries enhanced the natural geography with a theatrical backdrop of fine characteristic buildings illustrated beautifully by the spectacular view from Edinburgh's Calton Hill. From Waverley railway station along the valley of Princes Street Gardens Edinburgh Castle can be seen, perched spectacularly on the precipitous crag of volcanic rock. To the left of the castle, is the Old Town. Halfway along the valley, are the classical columns of the National Gallery of Scotland and the Royal Scottish Academy among the trees. On the right is the Scott Monument, an outstanding tribute to Sir Walter Scott the Edinburgh writer. To the north of the city, the New Town is located between the Castle and the Firth of Forth. Throughout the Lothians, castles, palaces and churches filled with tales from Scotland's past can be found. And for action and adventure, outstanding walking, sailing, fishing and a host of superb family attractions are on offer. Edinburgh also boasts a lively social scene and superb shopping experience. |
