York

The city of York has been home to the Romans, Vikings, Victorian industrialists and thespians to name but a few. York is steeped in distinct history from the house where Guy Fawkes was born to the Castle Museum and the cell where Dick Turpin was imprisoned.

Visit the world's largest railway museum, hire a motor boat for up to eight people operating from Easter to October, or climb the 275 steps of the York Minster. Walk the four kilometres of Roman walls and fortifications and see York from a different perspective or visit one of the finest racecourses in Britain.

In and amongst the city stunning buildings which reflect York's rich industrial past such as its woollen trade, railways and confectionery can be found. Both the Rowntree and Terry families brought about a delectable fondness for chocolate to the city.

Much of York's busy festival calendar is filled with Hopeful young comedians, musicians and actors providing music and theatre. York lends itself to relaxing in the open with scenic views around every corner, unwind by the riverside or wonder at the city from towers, bridges and the city walls.

The city of York boasts talented street musicians including buskers and the occasional visiting orchestra. The National Centre for Early Music, housed in the peaceful surroundings of St. Margaret's Church is worth a visit, with a programme of concerts that encompass every genre from classical and medieval to traditional jazz and contemporary.

Take your time to browse the popular shops and welcoming little cafes at the McArthur Glen designer outlet out-of-town retail park. On the outskirts of the city, two excellent farm shops can be found each selling locally sourced meat, wonderful cheeses, and exceptionally fresh produce.
