Liverpool

By the late 19th century Liverpool had become one of the world's greatest ports and millions of emigrants used its docks as a gateway to America . The city's grand buildings include the Walker Art Gallery and neoclassical St George's Hall, while the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building are well-known landmarks. Although passenger liners no longer enliven the waterfront, the Victorian Albert Dock has a new lease of life as a family entertainment centre.

ANGLICAN CATHEDRAL
Britain 's largest cathedral, 194m (636ft) long, this red sandstone Gothic Revival building was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott at the age of 21. Begun in 1904, it was not completed until 1978. From the central tower, Blackpool and the Welsh hills can be seen.

BEATLES STORY
The visitor attraction recreates the experience of Beatlemania with a reconstruction of the Cavern Club where the Liverpool-born pop group played in the 1960s.

CROXTETH HALL AND COUNTRY PARK
Once part of the country estate of the Earl of Sefton, the Jacobean hall has Edwardian furnishings and costumes, a Victorian walled garden, and extensive woods and parkland.

LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB MUSEUM
In addition to trophies, match shirts and newspaper clippings, the museum also boasts a perfectly recreated dressing room, an interactive penalty gallery and tours of the Anfield pitch.

LIVERPOOL MUSEUM
The displays here range from dinosaurs to space exploration, and include an aquarium, planetarium and a natural history centre.
